"IS IT BROKEN, OR IS IT JUST FRACTURED ?"
A common misunderstanding. The word "fractured" is just doctor-speak, meaning the bone is broken. So the words mean the same thing!
Fractures (broken bones) come in all degrees of severity. From hairline cracks to displaced and angulated, the treatment options can be as variable as the fracture itself. Some fractures lend themselves to conservative care, meaning surgery is not required--we can treat these in a splint or sometimes in a cast.
Some fractures involve major bones that would take a long time to heal without surgery, and some will actually heal faster with surgery. Other fractures are best addressed with surgery in order to better align the bone back to where it was before the fracture occurred. If this is the case, we offer the latest in training and techniques to get you back in one piece as quickly as possible.
The care of broken bones has changed so much over the past decades. Fractures once treated with prolonged hospital stays and traction attached to large pins driven through the bone are now treated as comparatively preferable outpatient procedures (you get to go home the same day as your surgery). Body casts have given way to minimally invasive surgery with low profile plates. Its a brave new world!
